Overview of Research Program
Since the inception of the ICE project in 2004, our team of investigators, practitioners and policy makers have been working together to provide strategic leadership to impact tobacco control programs and policies in Canada. Our research activities involve developing and funding innovative new programs and projects that support ICE objectives, as well as working collaboratively to address gaps in knowledge in research related to tobacco control and nicotine dependence.
Nicotine Dependence in Teens (NDIT) Study
The NDIT (Nicotine Dependence in Teens) Study is a prospective cohort investigation of 1293 students recruited in 1999 from all grade 7 classes in 10 secondary schools in Montreal. Its main objective is to describe the development of symptoms of nicotine dependence (ND) in relation to cigarette smoking in adolescents, and to identify genetic, socio-demographic, psychosocial, and environmental risk factors for the onset of cigarette use and ND symptoms. Youth Smoking Survey
The Youth Smoking Survey (YSS) is a Health Canada sponsored survey of students in grades 5 through 9 and their parents. The YSS was first administered in 1994 and was the largest and most comprehensive survey on youth smoking behaviours since 1979. The YSS was repeated in 2002 in order to track changes in the attitudes and behaviours of Canadian children and adolescents with respect to tobacco. Read more
AdoQuest
The AdoQuest study is a prospective cohort investigation of 1803 students aged 10-11 years recruited in 2004 from grade 5 classes in 30 schools in 5 geographic regions in and around Montreal. Its main objectives are to describe the co-occurrence of behavioral lifestyle risk factors. Read more
Project Impact
Project Impact: Youth and Tobacco is a study that examines the synergistic effects of school-based programs/policies, school neighborhood environment and community characteristics on school level smoking rates. In 2003, Phase 1 of this study established a cohort of secondary schools (n=82) with students in Grades 10-11 in 5 provinces (BC, MB, ON, QC, NL). Read more
